Samantha Tomlinson
Graduate Intern

Hi! My name is Sam, and I am a counseling intern and a graduate student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Adams State University. I am also a proud Fort Lewis College alum, and my own path to completing my undergraduate degree was not linear. This experience has deepened my empathy and connection with students navigating their own unique journeys.

In addition to my counseling internship, I work in community mental health, where I support individuals living with severe mental illness. I hold a certification in Post-Traumatic Growth Somatic Therapy and am passionate about the resilience of all people. I enjoy integrating mindfulness into my work and helping clients feel safe enough to experience their emotions at their own pace. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help people explore more compassionate and accurate perspectives of themselves, others, and their place in the world.

As a first-generation college graduate, I am especially passionate about supporting other first-generation students and those navigating the effects of socioeconomic barriers, systemic inequities, and other life challenges on mental health. I strive to approach this work with cultural humility, respect, and warmth.

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy spending time with my partner and our two dogs, hiking, camping, reading, connecting with friends, and FaceTiming my nieces and nephews. My guilty pleasure is watching reality TV, which I find to be a lighthearted way to unwind and laugh. Self-care is an important part of my life, and I strive to practice mindfulness each day by pausing to check in with myself, focusing on my breath, and taking in the good or “finding the glimmers.”
