Although on the public accounting track as an undergraduate, she unexpectedly joined the U.S. Peace Corps, where she taught Accounting and Computers in the Samoan Islands. This experience sparked her love of teaching! Upon returning, Melissa won a Peace Corps Coverdell graduate fellowship, where she earned a certificate in International Business, in addition to her master’s degree. During her time in private industry, Melissa worked for Fortune 500 companies MCIWorldCom (now Verizon) and Hewlett-Packard. She also held the position of Senior Accountant at a small software company before transitioning into full-time teaching in higher education. Melissa served as Chair for the Accounting program at Pikes Peak State College for over a decade. Before joining Fort Lewis College in 2025, she taught Accounting as a full-time faculty member at the College of San Mateo in Silicon Valley. In Fall 2023, Melissa successfully defended her dissertation and graduated with her doctorate.
