Dear Fort Lewis College,

Since I was a young girl, my North Carolinan parents have reinforced the importance of writing thank you notes. With graduation next month, I am compiling letters for individuals who supported me at the college. However, I realize that it was not individuals who enabled my personal growth, but the entire Fort Lewis College Community.

For some students at Fort Lewis College, spring break is more than just a time to travel, party, and relax. During Fort Lewis College’s spring break in March, six students participated in "Alternative Spring Break," doing service work and improving their professional skills in scenic Moab, Utah.

When I arrived at Fort Lewis College in the fall of 2011, I was sure about majoring in , but I had next to no idea what I wanted to minor in. There were so many options; how could I possibly limit myself to a mere one or two minors? I decided to take a class in the college’s honors program.

When you think of summer, what are some things that pop into your head? Sunshine? Tanning? Hanging with friends? What about not showering for 10 days at a time? Living outside? Or even the forearm muscles of a champion? If you spend a summer doing trail work, option B will comprise your summer much more accurately.

During Fort Lewis College's spring break in March, a team of students and Outdoor Pursuits staff tackled North America’s third-highest mountain, the 18,491-foot Pico de Orizaba, east of Mexico City in the state of Puebla. On Thursday, March 27th, the entire team -- eight students and two staff -- summited the volcano, after months of preparation and training.

I have had a lot of amazing opportunities at Fort Lewis College to explore my field of study beyond the classroom. I am an English Communication Major and throughout my time on the campus news magazine The Independent, I have moved through various positions. I started as a Print Reporter and I transitioned to become Online Manager and now for a year and a half I have been Editor in Chief.

When winter arrives at Fort Lewis College, there's only thing to do: Get outside! Fortunately, here in beautiful and rugged southwestern Colorado there are plenty of places and ways to get out-of-doors, with adventures suited to any and every skill level. Engulfed in the flames of a busy school and work schedule, I asked myself: “What am I getting out of all this?” Doing the bare minimum is an easy habit to form when you are trying to balance your work and school schedule. But after really questioning my decision to be in school, I came to the conclusion that the bare minimum isn’t enough.
